It All Starts With Nutrition

We make our foods from natural, healthful whole ingredients designed to support canine vitality and long term well being.

Of all the decisions you make for your dog, diet has the greatest impact on energy, digestion, skin, coat, and overall longevity. Understanding the fundamentals of canine nutrition helps you feed with clarity and confidence.

Dogs require six essential nutrient categories: protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and water. Each plays a distinct role in supporting health.

Energy Producing Nutrients

Protein

Protein provides essential amino acids needed for healthy tissue growth, repair, immune strength, and muscle maintenance. Quality protein is foundational to a balanced diet.

Fats

Fats provide concentrated energy and support skin, coat, and nutrient absorption. Essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6 play an important role in inflammation balance and overall vitality.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates provide accessible energy and fiber to support digestive health. Whole food carbohydrates from quality grains and vegetables offer nourishment beyond simple calories.

Non Energy Nutrients

Minerals and vitamins do not provide calories, but they are critical to life.

Minerals support bone development, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, oxygen transport, and fluid balance. Calcium and phosphorus must remain in proper proportion to maintain structural health.

Vitamins regulate metabolic processes, immune function, cellular repair, and blood health. Both fat soluble and water soluble vitamins must be present in balanced amounts to support long term wellness.

Why Balance Matters

Feeding fresh meat and vegetables alone does not automatically create a balanced diet. Calcium ratios, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, and amino acid requirements must be properly structured.

Balanced nutrition requires more than real ingredients. It requires thoughtful formulation.

All Happy Dog Food recipes are base mixes designed to pair with fresh protein, helping simplify balanced fresh feeding at home. Explore our Healthy Fresh Food for Dogs collection to see how each blend supports proper balance.

How to Feed Fresh

Transition gradually over 7 to 10 days to support digestive adaptation.

Days 1 to 3
25 percent fresh food, 75 percent current food

Days 4 to 6
50 percent fresh food, 50 percent current food

Days 7 to 9
75 percent fresh food, 25 percent current food

Day 10
Fully transitioned

Most dogs adjust smoothly when changes are introduced steadily. Puppies may require slightly higher protein during growth stages.

Balanced nutrition requires structure

Advanced Nutrition Details

Protein and Amino Acids

Protein is the foundation of your dog’s diet. It provides essential amino acids needed for healthy tissue, muscle maintenance, immune strength, and cellular repair. Dogs require a full spectrum of amino acids from their food.

That is why our base mixes are designed to pair with fresh meat. Real protein, properly supported.

Fats and Essential Fatty Acids

Fats provide concentrated energy and support healthy skin, coat, and nutrient absorption. Essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and Omega 6 play a major role in reducing inflammation and maintaining coat shine.

Balance matters. Too little or too much can affect long term health.

Carbohydrates and Fiber

Carbohydrates provide usable energy and support digestive health. Whole food carbohydrates, including grains and vegetables, offer fiber that promotes healthy bowel function and gut balance.

The difference is not carbs versus no carbs. The difference is quality and digestibility.

Minerals and Structural Balance

Minerals support bone development, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, oxygen transport, and fluid balance.

Calcium and phosphorus must exist in the proper ratio. Trace minerals such as zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine support immune function, thyroid health, and metabolic stability.

Over time, even small imbalances can affect long term health. This is where proper formulation becomes critical.

Vitamins and Metabolic Support

Vitamins regulate hundreds of essential processes including immune response, blood clotting, growth, cellular repair, and energy metabolism.

Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body. Water soluble vitamins must be replenished daily. Both must be present in appropriate amounts to support healthy function.

Water and Hydration

Water is the most overlooked nutrient. It regulates temperature, lubricates joints, supports digestion, and allows nutrients to move throughout the body.

Fresh food naturally contains more moisture than dry kibble, supporting hydration at the cellular level.

Small batch. Whole food ingredients. Thoughtfully formulated.

Feed Fresh With Confidence

Balanced nutrition is not about trends. It is about structure, quality ingredients, and consistency. When fresh food is properly formulated, it supports vitality at every life stage. With the right foundation, feeding fresh becomes simple and sustainable.
